On the Path

December, 2024
by Rev. Bill Gupton

Friends, as we approach the holidays and begin the seasonal shift to winter, we find ourselves at the beginning of some very dark times – which will last well beyond the spring thaws and blossoming buds that, in just a few short months, inevitably await us outdoors in the natural world. “For everything there is a season,” says the scripture, and the season we must now live through will test us all.

I want you to know that Heritage Church is – and will be – here for you, and for your family, and for your loved ones, in the days that lie ahead. We will continue to center Love in everything we do. We will continue to be a sanctuary – a safe haven – for those who are, far too often, attacked and oppressed, dehumanized and traumatized in our society. We will not go back. We are not giving up – and we are not giving up our values. When we say we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, we mean it. When we say we are allies, we mean it. We will resist injustice and inequity, violence, and victimization at every turn. And we will do it – together.

This winter – and beyond – let us lock arms in solidarity, reach out hands in welcome, and stand together for the principles and beliefs we cherish. Let us keep one another warm, as the days grow chill. As we light our candles and illuminate our Christmas tree this month, let us be a light of hope, a beacon of faith, and a tangible manifestation of the Love that is the spirit of our church.

I hope to see you this holiday season. I hope to offer you a hug of support and encouragement. I hope you will come home to Heritage, for the holidays. As the reading in our hymnal says, “We need one another.” Now, more than ever.

Blessings,
Rev. Bill
