St. John’s UU church located at 320 Resor Ave, Cincinnati (Clifton), 45220, presents a new opera on Saturday, March 8at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate International Women’s Day. This free musical reading of “Forward Into Light” is a dramatization of the work of suffragist Alice Paul. A reception sponsored by the League of Women Voters follows at St. John’s.
This opera was composed by the St. John’s pianist Stephen Variames, with the words of librettist Kathleen Stakenas. This debut will be a musical reading (sung, not acted.)
Stephen and four singers will present the opera about the women’s marches of the early 1900s in the U.S. and specifically of suffragist Alice Paul, who helped secure women’s right to vote, coordinated 18 months of protests outside the White House, and authored the Equal Rights Amendment.
The evening includes an historical perspective by Dr. Kimberly Hamlin, the Chamberlin Family Professor and Chair of History at Miami University, and board member of the League of Women Voters of the United States.
