Sunday, January 29: “Whither Our Principles?”

Rev. Bill Gupton

It took a multi-year process to reach this moment, but the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Association has just released revisions to the Bylaws of the UUA that will be proposed at this summer’s General Assembly. In this proposal, some of our Seven Principles – which have been the bedrock and unifying spiritual affirmation of Unitarian Universalism for more than a generation, and which we have taught to our children and shared with our friends and neighbors by way of explaining our unique religion to them – would become unrecognizable, while others would become merely a portion of a larger framework of “values” and “covenants.”

This morning’s service is the first of a two-part Sunday series examining the significant changes taking place within Unitarian Universalism at the denominational, and in some cases local, level. What is happening to our Principles? What does it all mean for the future of Unitarian Universalism?

2023.
