All together now! As part of our process towards becoming an all-ages church, especially eliminating age “silos,” we’ve made some major changes to our programs for children and youth.
Instead of five age-segregated classrooms (PreK; K/1; 2nd/3rd; 4th/5th and Jr/Sr High) we’re transitioning to an “all-together” program for children fifth grade and younger. (Our Jr/Sr High group continues to meet separately. See the *notes at the end of this article).
Each Sunday of the month has a different focus:
One Sunday (typically the first Sunday of the month) is Chalice Chapel, a special worship service that is designed specifically for children and youth using “Come Into the Circle: Worshipping with Children” by UU Michele Richards as a resource for learning and inspiration.
Another Sunday is focused on hands-on Social Justice activities. In February children made Valentines for refugee and immigrant families. More help is needed to identify projects and volunteers/leaders for these Sundays.
A third Sunday will be a ‘spiritual practice’ Sunday where we talk about the importance of a spiritual practice and have activities centered around different practices. In February we made mindfulness bottles and talked about meditation as a way of calming our minds.
And, at least one Sunday each month will be worship-for-all-ages.
To reflect these changes, we’ve changed the name of our programming from Religious Education to Religious Exploration.
Moving away from curriculum towards all-ages programming means we need far fewer volunteers for our programs. However, we still need leaders and helpers! If you need more information, please contact Rev. Leslie. Ready to sign up to be a helper? Click here to go directly to our Sign Up Genius form!
Sunday mornings will be great at Heritage with all of us together! Won’t you join us?
*Notes: During our regular RE time, our junior and senior high youth are rehearsing a play, “Us and Them,” that will be presented in the worship service on April 14th. Youth not interested in being part of the play are welcome to join the ‘all together’ group.
We’re also experimenting with having the preschoolers in the ‘all together’ group. Current thinking is to have them begin together in the Preschool Room and join the other children after they leave the sanctuary. We’re seeing how this works and may make changes in the near future.
