Sunday, May 31: “Why Democracy?”

Ballot box at Kowmia language school polling station at Agouza, Giza

Ballot box at Kowmia language school polling station at Agouza, Giza

Bob Lamb.

After we vote in our annual meeting, we will discuss our Fifth Principle–The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. Do we celebrate democracy, or do we mourn it? Bob isn’t sure, so come help him figure it out.

Sunday, May 24: “Memorial Day: We Remember Them”

Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery

Forrest Brandt.

We honor the stories and lives of those who’ve gone before us – traditionally remembering those who gave their lives in service to their country. This year, let’s also remember loved ones who’ve given their lives through everyday service to their families, their community, their church, their world. The Heritage Mountain Boys will join us with special music.

Sunday, May 17: “Flower Communion”

Mixed FlowersConnie Booth.

Each spring our congregation participates in a uniquely Unitarian Universalist tradition, the Flower Communion, to celebrate our beloved community.

Everyone is asked to bring a flower to church- from the garden, from the store, or from the roadside. These blooms are added to our common bouquet as we gather for worship. During the service each person chooses a different flower to take home, thus symbolizing both the gifts we bring and those we receive.

Established in Europe by Rev. Norbert Capek, this UU tradition has found its way into many, if not most, UU congregations across country.

Join us as we continue this tradition now for more than 40 years within our walls. The music of the choir and special guest musicians will enrich our time together.

Worship Associate: Suzanne Horton.

Wednesday, May 13, 7:00 p.m.: Vespers Service

Stained GlassVespers Services provide our congregants time to come together in a spirit of contemplation – participating in singing, hearing the spoken word and honoring a time of silence. The cycle of these three worship styles is repeated 4-5 times during the evening. The Vespers service will take place on May 13, 2015, starting at 7:00 p.m. and lasting approximately an hour.

Participants are asked to enter the sanctuary in silence and to leave the same way. As always, people are welcome to linger after the service. Childcare is not provided.

We have enjoyed this meditative time together each month since September. After the May service, we will take a summer break. For info about helping in the fall, contact Connie Booth, Steph Tacy or Mimi Sinclair.

Contact Connie with questions.

Sunday, May 3: “Is Everyone Included?”

Self-Identified Genderqueer YouthSenior High Youth Group.

On the surface, gender appears to be an either-or situation — at least that’s what most of us are taught from the very moment of our birth, wrapped in a pink or blue blanket. Troubled by recent tragedies involving local trans* youth, our senior high group explores gender identity and expression in what is sure to be a thought-provoking worship service. Our three graduating seniors will also Bridge into young adulthood.

Sunday, April 26: “Sabbath…How Rest Can Heal Our World”

Family on a Blanket OutsideSuzanne Horton.

Within the natural world there is rhythm. It can be observed in the ocean’s tides, a growing season, a waxing of the moon, as well as a time for going inward, dormancy, or rest. Rest is one of the ways the natural world remains in balance. As humans we are well aware of a daily physical need for sleep but what about another type of rest that helps to restore our soul’s balance? What is Sabbath time? Please join us as we explore why our world is in need of deeper rest and how we may find ways to manifest this sacred time, or Sabbath practice, within the framework our busy and demanding lives.

William Howard Taft, 1909Rev. Frank W Carpenter, D.Min.

Cincinnati native William Howard Taft was the most recent Unitarian to be President of the United States. After he left the White House he was the leading Unitarian layman. During World War One he took the lead for building American morale. His most important lifetime goal was supporting international peace negotiations. Is his work relevant to our world?
