Sunday, January 6: Twelfth Night and Other Epiphanies

Roger Miller

Roger Miller.

Today, January 6th, is the day on the Christian calendar set aside for the celebration of Epiphany. Holy days such as Epiphany can be as ubiquitous as Christmas, Easter, Passover, Yom Kippur, and Ramadan, or completely personal in nature. Heritage member Roger Miller will explore the historical meaning of Epiphany and other holy days in a variety of faith traditions. We will also discuss the holy days that are observed in Unitarian Universalism and how they relate to those of other faiths.

Sunday, December 30: “Changes in Perspective”

Lauren Martinez

Lauren Martinez.

As we turn a corner and wait for a new year to begin, many people tend to reflect on how to optimize their year ahead. Most of the ways we attempt to act on this lose steam quickly, as people return to habitual behaviors, thoughts and beliefs. Yet as we continue to be challenged, saddened, heartbroken, confused and lost by external forces in the political, social and environmental climates we have been facing, how can we show up for change? The call is there for us to act, be and live differently – but how? How do we make what seems inaccessible, overwhelming accessible?

Lauren Martinez is the child of our own friend and Choir member Dr. Gloria Walker, and is visiting town for the holidays. They are currently in their first year of seminary in Berkeley, Calif., at the UU affiliated divinity school, Starr King School for the Ministry. Although Lauren’s interests and desires are vast, the focus of their future work intersects social/healing justice through ancestral ritual and embodiment practices loosely inspired from liberation and queer theology teachings. Lauren believes the most optimal form of healing starts with the individual’s connection with Spirit, and constant inquiry and reflection. They hope to explore their many creative talents in writing, music, athletics and education alongside their journey in seminary. Their pronouns are they/them/theirs. They grew up in Cincinnati and Batavia, and attended Denison University for undergraduate studies.

Monday, December 24: Christmas Eve Service (7 p.m.)

Rev. Bill Gupton.

It’s an annual tradition at Heritage Church – our Christmas Eve candlelight service. Each year our Choir and other special musicians offer us beautiful sounds to celebrate the season, and we share traditional readings and carols while warming our souls in the glow of candlelight, friendly faces and the Love that is the Spirit of this church.

The sanctuary is always full, so please plan to arrive a bit early. Childcare will be offered for babies and toddlers, but our Christmas Eve service is always family friendly and not overly long, so children from preschool on up should be fine in the sanctuary with their families. Bring something (and plan to stay afterward) for our festive community gathering in the Great Hall, with cider and sweets. All are invited!

Sunday, December 23: “Pop-Up Christmas Pageant”

RE Sabbatical Team.

Our Pop-Up pageant is so much fun that we’ll do it again this year! Our pageant tells the story of The Nativity with all the familiar players and carols and, yes, no rehearsal. This multi-generational experience will cast all characters on-the-spot, from shepherds to angels to animals, with basic costumes provided for everyone who wishes to participate. Come one, come all and be a part of our Pop-Up Pageant!

Sunday, December 16: “A Midwinter Morning’s Dream”

Rev. Bill Gupton.

With all apologies to William Shakespeare (with whom he shares both a name and a birthday), our Senior Minister will reflect today on Winter, on the magic of the season, and maybe on a dream or two. Our service will be brightened by special music from Arleigh Riddle.

Sunday, December 9: “Plugging In”

Rev. Bill Gupton.

We all know what it is like to feel disconnected – from what’s going on in our world, or at work; from community and loved ones. As the holidays approach, as we “plug in” the lights on our Christmas tree in the Heritage sanctuary and perhaps at home, let’s talk about how we can become more “plugged in” to those around us, and to the Source of Life and Light itself. Our Youth Choir will help warm our hearts this cold winter morning.

Sunday, December 2: “A Heritage of Enduring Legacy”

Bill Lyon

Bill Lyon.

As members of a faith community and of the world-at-large, we share gifts of time, talent and treasure. Bill Lyon will explore the spiritual sources (especially for UUs) of this generosity. We will also consider how we can leave a lasting legacy to the causes and organizations most dear to us. Today we will also enjoy music from our choir.

Sunday, November 25: Self Love and Liberation: Learning to Be Grateful for Everything

Tracey DuEst

Tracey DuEst.

“As a Unitarian Universalist I affirm and promote the Seven Principles, which I hold as strong values and ways of being in the world. Yet, is there an unstated component embedded in these principles that could help us all be more effective at spreading the message of love that is at the core of our faith?” Heritage Church member Tracey DuEst takes us on her journey from her prison of perfectionism to self-love and liberation.

Sunday, November 18: “A Harvest of Gratitude”

Rev. Bill Gupton.

Each year, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we gather in grateful community to give thanks for the many blessings that fill our lives. Today we will share in a bread communion, enjoy intergenerational thanksgiving, sing songs, receive the gift of song from our beloved Choir, and more. See you at church for our annual “Thanksgiving Sunday.” (Oh, and please bring a dish to share and plan to stick around after the service for our harvest potluck lunch!)

Sunday, November 11: “Remembrance Day”

Lou Kerr

Lou Kerr.

One hundred years ago this November 11, the guns fell silent as fighting ended on the Western Front of World War One. This morning, Heritage Church member Lou Kerr will share both an historical and personal reflection of those we honor this Remembrance Day.
