Adult Faith Development Programs

by Karen Hager

Although my responsibilities as your Interim Religious Educator extend only through high school youth, my position in Blacksburg is Lifespan, with responsibility from cradle to grave. In this Lifespan role, I implement a full range of adult classes and activities.

I would like to invite HUUC congregants to join the Blacksburg congregation this winter and spring in our Adult Faith Development program. All offerings are virtual, so our geographic distance presents no obstacle. This will be a chance to experience UU adult programs, while also getting to know other Unitarian Universalists.

You are invited to join any of the following as your schedule permits. No registration is necessary.

The Fifth Dimension for Adults: this is a new class that I will be teaching that utilizes episodes of The Twilight Zone as the basis for discussion of values, ethics, and social justice issues. Held the fourth Tuesday of the month, January-May, from 7-8 p.m. Begins Tuesday, January 26 with a viewing of the episode “The Obsolete Man” and a discussion on totalitarianism.

Sunday Circle: conversation on a wide variety of topics; topics are available on the Blacksburg website at https://uucnrv.org/worship/sunday-circle/. Meets the first and third Sundays of the month through May from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Anti-Racism Discussion Group: an ongoing discussion group on racial justice and white privilege. Meets the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Spiritual Aging: our minister, Rev. Pam Phillips, leads this group that intentionally explores the process of aging. Meets the first Sunday of the month at 3:00 p.m.

Community Conversations: a conversational bridge across issues that divide and separate us. They provide an easy structure for engaging in friendly yet meaningful conversation with those with whom we may not agree. Meets the third Sunday of the month at 11:30 am.

Conversations on Our Faith: discussion on a book that deepens our spiritual journey; all are welcome, even if you have not read the chapters being discussed. Meets Wednesdays at noon.

Meditation: centering words and basic instruction are followed by sitting practice; non-experienced and experienced meditators are welcome. Meets Tuesday evenings 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Common Read discussion group: discussion of the 2020 UUA Common Read, Breathe: A Letter to My Sons, by Imani Perry. Date TBD.

More information on these programs can be found at https://uucnrv.org/learn/adults/. Zoom links for programs will be included in weekly announcements. If you have any questions, contact me at:
