Poet Gary Snyder said, “Poetry has an interesting function. It helps people be where they are.” At a time in our culture when we are pulled away from the present moment, ways to become more mindful become a lifeline. Meditation, labyrinth walking, breath work, and Zen tangle coloring books can all bring us more fully into the present moment. These practices can enhance our sense of wellbeing, strengthen our relationships, improve our immune systems, and boost memory and focus. How can poetry similarly bring mindfulness into our lives? Let’s explore this powerful medium as a potential vehicle, enabling us to move toward greater awareness.
