Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) provides homeless families with emergency shelter and hospitality through interfaith communities and works with these families to find and retain stable housing. IHN is nearly unique in Cincinnati in keeping whole families together.
As part of this, four weeks out of the year First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati provides shelter for up to four homeless families. First Church is assisted by a Baptist church, a Mennonite church, other UU churches – and Heritage.
One volunteer role is Dinner Host. You work with another person (who has already volunteered) to plan a menu, buy the ingredients, cook dinner, eat with the homeless guests, and clean up. It is an opportunity to share fellowship with people.
We also need Activity Hosts to be with the kids after dinner. This is a great opportunity for a whole family, and allows your own children to learn what it is like to be of service to the less fortunate. Activities can include any kind of reasonable play or entertainment for both younger and older kids.
We also need two Overnight Hosts – a male and a female. Your job is to stay on site overnight. Bring a sleeping bag – you get to sleep too on a cot that is provided.
